Walking Update

A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world.

~Paul Dudley White

Lessons learned from the first Long Walk
  1. Rain makes things wet, including crushed limestone trails.  This means one needs to constantly look down & ahead to avoid a step that will land you in a knee-twisting mud patch.
  2. The sun CAN burn a moving target so use a sweat resistant sunblock.
  3. Cotton socks = blisters.  Invest in new socks pronto.
  4. A watch is much better for tracking time than a cell phone.
  5. A large wad of keys on a lanyard are hard to stow, lighten the key load for next time.
  6. Earlier start = cooler walk.  Prepare better the night before so we can just leave as soon as Turtle wakes up.
  7. I CAN walk 5 miles!
I was able to complete the 5 miles in one go, so I am THRILLED!  I didn't make great time because I'm not used to exercising in heat & humidity.  But I was very close to the time I was shooting for so I'm hopeful that the times will improve with cooler temperatures.   I'll have to do the next Long Walk on Friday because that's the only time I'll have someone to watch Turtle.

Next goal:  6 miles

If I haven't mentioned it, I'm following the marathon training plan laid out by Jonathan Roche, the king of No Excuses Workouts.  Check him out if you haven't already!

  1. Yeah C-Joy! I have a little key pocket with velcro that I stick on my shoe. It holds the key to my car. I got it at scheels--you have to look in the biking dept to find them.
