For one of DH's Father's Day gifts, I hauled out my sewing machine and made him one of these:
Inspiration and directions were found here. The print side is from a jelly roll collection I bought a couple of years ago, the backside is a light blue wool felt leftover from a school project. (Yeah! Using what I had on hand!) Now DH can sleep as late as Turtle will allow, without the sun bothering him. He also got a remote control Ferrari, so it wasn't all practicality and scraps this Father's Day. Did you make anything special for a Father's Day gift?

Tutu cute bedskirt
Slowly but surely I've been working on Turtle's bedroom, changing it from a toddler's room to that of a Big Girl. Right before the end of the school year, Turtle asked for a big bed. Since birth she has slept on a floor bed, so it was just a matter of bringing in the box spring & frame we had stored in the basement.
I rearranged her room so that she can use it as a play house. She has her table & chair as well as her play stove on one end of the room, and her bed in the corner. Turtle had also asked that her bed be pretty, so I decided to create a tutu bedskirt.
15 yards of tulle & a thrift-store bedskirt as a backing later, this is what I came up with:
Not bad for for $20! Cutting the tulle into strips was tedious. Thank goodness the bed is against the wall so I only had to cover one short & one long side of the bed. We may need to trim the tulle as we keep stepping on the tutu. Oh well, I love it! Now we just need a little princess canopy. I saw one at IKEA that would work well, or I may get ambitious and create one using the directions from Girl's World: Twenty-One Sewing Projects to Make for Little Girls

Boite a Couture
I think this is going to be my next project: a sewing basket!
My main craft space is in my basement. It is not always convenient to work there, especially in the evenings when I'm alone with my toddler. I'm thinking a basket that can hold some sewing basics (as well as space for a project) will make it easier for me to do some hand sewing in the evenings and keep things together.
I found this nifty box at my local craft store. She's pretty, n'est-ce pas?
Around Christmas I ordered this fabric from the lovely jojoebi
Birds and the Eiffel Tower -could it be any sweeter? I think this fabric will be perfect for creating pockets and compartments to hold my sewing goodies inside my box. Yet another thing that makes me smile when I see it!

Scaredy Cat Challenge: Upcycled Smock, Part II
I was able to take a deep breath and make the first cut! In fact, I have all the pieces cut. You'll have to trust me on this even though I don't have a photo to show you just yet. Our memory card is full at the moment with the epic Daddy v. Turtle Living Room Hockey Tournament video. Once its been cleared (and light cooperating) I shall add a picture :)
The biggest challenge was trying to figure out the grain of the fabric. With some Twitter advice and a little applied logic, I pinned the pieces in what I assume to be the correct direction and cut the darn thing out! The next step is to attach the pieces. Together. With the sewing machine. Which bears marks of being handled by the aforementioned Turtle. And probably needs a new needle for this very important project. It really would be better if I took it in for a tune-up before even thinking of making the first stitch too............
Well, those are some of my excuses for this challenge. What are the excuses for holding you back from doing something you'd like to do? Go to DianeDenmark to link to your challenge & to see what others are doing!
